Abstract
Objective: The goal of this study was to develop the Hallym University-word recognition test by pictures (HU-WRP) for hearing-impaired children.

Method: Sixty monosyllabic words were selected from Korean children¡¯s word list. Out of sixty words, 40 words were further selected and divided into 4 lists, each of them has 10 words. The actual test material was consisted of 10 plates with 6 colored pictures on each plate. Four out of six pictures were used as test stimuli, each word belongs to a different list. Two pictures were added for decreasing probability in case of random selection. Each of the four list was made of 10 words on each plate. Subjects included 50 normal and 30 hearing-impaired children. The words were presented at comfortable loudness levels for both normal and hearing-impaired children with their hearing aids on.

Results: The results indicated that normal children discriminated all words with 100% accuracy and hearing-impaired children showed accuracy over 90% for 35 words and under 80 % for two words. the difficulty levels among four lists did not show any significant differences for both groups. These results suggest that this test is suitable for testing children¡¯s word recognition ability. However, more data should be obtained before it can be utilized as a standardized clinical tool for hearing impaired children.

Conclusion: HU-WRP can be utilized for a valuable clinical and rehabilitative trai-ning tool for normal and hearing-impaired children with minor modification.
